Derry Cathedral Somme Centenary Remembrance Service

  • St Columb's Cathedral,

St Columb's Cathedral will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Somme with a special commemorative service on Sunday 18th September 2016

Ina Boyle's Anthem ‘Wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?’ will be sung by the Choir of St Columb’s Cathedral as part of the special centenary event in Derry. This anthem, which Boyle dedicated to the Ulster division, was to have been sung by the Choir in 1916, however, so many of the men of the City went to fight in the Great War that it could not be performed. Ina would have been so pleased that this performance is happening at last!

Dean Morton said “The Service is open to all denominations and to anyone who wants to give thanks for the sacrifice of the young men of Derry”.

In Ireland

Ina Boyle's setting of two poems by John Dunne will be performed by Tenor Robin Tritschler as part of the Composing the Island commemorative concerts on Thursday 8th September 2016.

A shared fascination with Ireland, its landscape, language and folk traditions inspired a number of leading Irish and English composers from Frederick May to the ‘master of the king’s music’ Arnold Bax. The result of this can be heard in the pieces being performed in this concert – chamber music and songs from the first decades of the 20th century.

Hamilton Harty  In Ireland (arr.) harp, flute, quartet (1918)
Frederick May  Four Romantic Songs (1933)
